He comes off badly in
1776 as an opponent of independence and at least somewhat in
John Adams too though his emotional speech on the horrors of what would occur provided a respectful dissent. Think someone from the South c. 1860. Also, overall, some might get an unfair view of his overall career. See, e.g., the "
Declaration of the Causes and of the Necessity of Taking Up Arms." JD even was involved in the ratification of the Constitution.
