Odds and Ends

Various thoughts: "Integrity," safeguards needed for preventive detention of enemy detainees, and the importance of a social safety net / helping hand to deal with economic messiness.

In Support of the 9/11 Commission Report: In contrast to Judge Posner's negative review, sadly seen by too many online as a worthy read, Elizabeth Drew over in The NY Review of Books has a lot of good to say about the report, notes the importance of the survivors' pressure, and the value of the commission's public friendly policies, while suggesting the Bush Administration deserves some special blame. In fact, it might be said to be too supportive to be seen as a truly balanced account and doesn't really analyze the recommendations. All the same, it still comes out as more credible than Posner's smear job.

Court News: As we await the beginning of a new Supreme Court term, other interesting events are going on. Another federal court struck down the Partial Birth Abortion Law (health grounds). Another Washington State court struck down the state ban on gay marriages. And, the administration submitted answers to a challenge to the recess appointment of Judge Pryor. The brief (along with other news, see here) is pretty convincing, but cannot help the fact that pragmatically the practice is a bad idea. And, just heavy-handed bully boy tactics in the two cases at stake here.

The Mets lost again ... the Astros are in first place in the Wild Card Race ... Yes, Virginia, it's sometimes possible to come back from the dead.
