My Life as a Traitor by
Zarah Ghahramani is a striking account of a dissident Iranian's short stint as a political prisoner in turn of the century Iran. That is, a few years back. Sensory deprivation as much as physical mistreatment (including cutting off of her long hair) is her biggest enemy. Marjanne Doree performed the audio book -- and it was some performance, akin to a one woman show. Powerful, especially the ending. Much recommended.
