'11 Films

There might be something else from '11 that I will see in the movies, but this year cemented the policy of seeing many films in other media, including Netflix and DVD.  I also found often that there was nothing really that interesting to watch, though a few weeks didn't see one or the other film for some other reason.  A telling point in the former category was Christmas where there wasn't anything overly interesting to see at the local multiplex, though the zoo movie might have worked (others didn't want to see it) and the tattoo movie just looked too long.

Let me give a handful of films, each of a different caliber.  The year started with the end of the year favorite, True Grit, an excellent film all around.  Later, I saw the mature romantic comedy/drama, Crazy, Stupid, Love, which was flawed but appreciated for its overall talent and decency.  Steve Carrell again impresses, after Dan in Real Life and Date Night (somewhat sadly playing it more safe).  The standard but still well done sports flick I enjoyed was The Mighty Macs.

And, the bad choice: the lame blockbuster, the Sherlock Holmes film, that turned me off within five minutes with a tired fight scene. The Jolie directed Balkans drama is something to watch eventually too.  Not a fan of MI, Tom Cruise generally annoying me, and MI2 was a joyless star turn that missed that the point of the show was the ensemble fun in brought. I will see The Help, Moneyball and Midnight in Paris when they arrive at my local library, each on reserve.  A few others, including the John Sayles latest, Amigo, are also on my radar when they arrive.

Another not great year in theaters overall.
