Debts and Coins
I think Dorf makes some good points here and in his longer article, which also alludes to the argument that "debt" might not (the USSC barely directly dealt with the matter) include "obligations" like social security benefits (he supports a broader understanding). Technically legal or not, I also think the platinum coin idea is real stupid. Not into stupid.

Judging from a report of an interview with Lawrence Tribe reported at Washingtonmonthly.com, stupid or not, the coin may be the way the administration is going to go. Tribe says they can't use the 4th Amendment but they can use the coin. Tribe is apparently God on what is constitutional and what is not. The press secretary says the coin question has been referred to Treasury for an opinion. I wonder what opinion the Treasury will come to.
I'm with Stephen Colbert on the coin, but I'm not God of anything much, so what do I know? Shall see.
[Colbert noted it should have a picture of one of those bears you see in toilet paper commercials -- though even little girls realize bears don't use the stuff -- since you will need something real soft when you take something that size out of your ass.]
