The Silver Cord

Many old films, especially from the early 1930s, might be somewhat difficult to watch these days. They are paced different, for instance, seemingly too slow and drawn out. But, there are some still well worth seeing. Channels like TCM provide a chance to catch some of these films. I used to catch some on tape back in the day too.

The Silver Cord is pretty talky at times. One movie review book speaks of it as a filmed staged play. And, the mother character is a tad over the top. But, it still is very good with some nifty writing. The actresses are great, including the supporting actress seen in that video, who married her co-star Joel McCrea (in an early role here), staying married until his death nearly sixty years later. Very good "why you suck" speech.

There is a video review at the first link provided that sums things up well in about three minutes. The two younger women are refreshingly independent and not willing to sacrifice their lives. And, the mother does get a chance to defend herself, if as a sign of what not to do. One doubts things are totally different today parent/children-wise.
