Two Films and Book

TCM often has days with films with the same actor. Jeanne Crain was the actor in question recently. She was in various enjoyable films, including the early race-conscious film Pinky

One early film was Apartment for Peggy, where her husband is a struggling student and a crusty professor gives them an apartment. The Model and The Marriage Broker was another charming film with Thelma Ritter as the marriage broker.  I also re-watched People Will Talk with Cary Grant.

Cary Grant is an independent-minded doctor and professor who falls in love with her after she faints in his class. Turns out she is pregnant and the father is not around anymore. He is also the target of a colleague, who has McCarthyesque methods. Grant's friend also has an interesting story.

Medea is a creature of Greek tragedy. She helps Jason (Jason and the Argonauts) but is forever a distrusted foreigner, who is never quite civilized.

For instance, some tales have her killing her brother to help Jason escape. This graphic novel takes its own twist on the facts. It is translated from French.

The book mostly sees things from a realistic point of view though it adds a magical thing near the end. The art is excellent and the story engaging. The last twenty pages provide some commentary, partly noting how it changed the usual account.

Diane Lane has been in various travelogues over the years from when she had "a little romance" as a teenager. Under the Tuscan Sun is an adult role.

Paris Can Wait (with Alec Baldwin as her husband) involves an extended trip to Paris by car, her ear infection making it inadvisable that she take a plane ride with her husband. She is about fifty in this film.

Eleanor Coppola, wife of the famous director, has her first effort involving a fictional film. She did documentary work in the past. The film is a laid-back journey, a flirty Frenchman driving Lane.

The film is pleasant enough but somewhat lacking in content to fill in the whole running time. Still, there is enough pleasant food, scenery, and Diane Lane.
